FotoWeek DC Architectural Projections

I shot this photo for the Newseum while giant images were projected on the building's First Amendment table during FotoWeek DC.  As in previous years, it's so cool to see awesome photographs projected right on top to the First Amendment...something so sweet about that.
FotoWeek continues to be an elevating experience.  Many thanks are due to the organizers, volunteers, and the public for eating it all up.  Try as I might, I couldn't be in 2 places at once... I still got to see some wonderful, inspiring work (Danny Clinch, Brian Storm among others)...as well as running into old friends, and witnessing the public's continued fascination with photography in all it's various incarnations.

Johns Hopkins Gillman Hall Multi-Row Pano

I was thrilled to be commissioned by Johns Hopkins University to create this image portraying the new atrium in Gillman Hall; their recently rennovated, and much beloved iconic campus building. To capture the grand scale of the glass roof and show use of the space I shot this as a multi-row panorama.

12 Foot Long Conference Room Print

Many Thanks to Artist Circle Fine Art (ARTCFA) for selling and installing this giant 12 foot long canvas print.  It's featured in the conference room of the Federation of American Hospitals' national headquarters in Washington, DC.

Quoting from ARTCFA's blog: "Artists Circle coordinated with our framer and one of our installers to have the canvas print stretched on-site.  After assessing the [very small] elevators and determining the stairs were just too tight to carry such a large piece up, we decided the only way to accomplish the Federation of American Hospital’s need for such a monumental piece would be to stretch it in their office.  The photo, taken from the rooftop of 101 Constitution Avenue, makes quite the statement upon walking into the SKB designed space."

I was blown away at how well the photo blew up...previously it had only been printed at 6 feet long...it looks absolutlely great...amazing that I shot the image so long ago in digital technology years (3), since now I shoot each section of my panoramas with a camera that has twice the resolution (25mp).

Green Roof

I had the privilege of creating this image celebrating The American Society of Landscape Architects' (ASLA) beautiful and inspiring "Green Roof" atop their national headquarters in Washington, DC.  The hyper-resolution panoramic photograph is featured on a mammoth 14.5 ft. x 8 ft. street level window display at the ASLA Building (636 I Street NW).  Installed for ASLA's annual convention, the exhibit is slated to be up for over a year.  I also created an image for an interactive tour of the roof.  Check out how ASLA is working to increase awareness of the beauty, functionality, environmental and economic benefits of Green Roofs:  http://www.asla.org/greenroof

Newseum: Kids Free

As a media-lover and consumer of images, I always enjoy visiting the Newseum because of it's amazing multi-media presentations related to news reporting and its championing of the all important First Amendment.  I recently shot images for their current "Kids Free" campaign that are appearing on DC Metro buses as well as print ads in major newspapers and travel publications.  If you have kids, now is a great time to check out the Newseum.

Communication Arts 2010 Photo Annual-Page 178

I am absolutely thrilled to let you know my panorama of a snowstorm clearing over The Capitol last winter won recognition in the 2010 Communication Arts (CA) Photography Annual.  CA is the premiere journal of commercial visual communications and promotes the highest professional standards in the field.  The photo won in the Institutional category that covers images made for corporate, association, foundation, and institutional clients.  I shot the panorama as part of an ongoing series of images showing the amazing view of Washington from the building's terrace for Lincoln Property Company, the building's management firm.  The Photo Annual is July/August issue of CA.

Volkswagen: At Home in America

Over the past few months I've photographed numerous employees of the Volkswagen Group of America for the company's web, social media, and print promotions.  Shooting occurred at corporate offices in Virginia and Michigan, as well as the engineering lab in Palo Alto, CA and a parts distribution center in Fort Worth, TX.  Photos depict the company "At Home in America" by portraying staff in both work and leisure environments.  It was really fun to work with the creative group at Public Strategies, who coordinated the shoots for VWGoA.

Front and Center

This is a lovely use of a panorama I was commissioned to shoot by Miller & Chevalier, a leading DC law firm.  I shot this image from their office terrace overlooking The Treasury Department and The White House.  The firm has used the image, along with others I produced, for their website. This is a new brochure using the image to tout the firm as being "front and center" showing their vantage point from which they represent a fascinating array of clients.

U.S. Department of the Interior Way-Finding Panels Installed!

I'm psyched that the Interior Department Way-Finding panels were installed last week during the great springy weather in DC.  The project included shooting 2 panoramic images (East and South) of the spectacular view of Washington as seen from the terrace of the Main Interior Department Building near 19th and Constitution Ave.  I also provided turnkey project management coordinating design, fabrication, and installation.
Bobbi Kittner, talented graphic designer (and my dear wife too) provided the design service.  The images are printed on porcelain by Winsor Fireform, the same company that made the Newseum way-finding panels.  Winsor's process to bake the image and text into porcelain must be magic because the images are so rich and vibrant (makes you want to just eat them up)...plus they can be exposed to the elements for decades without fading or other problems.  Dan Lloyd and his New Visions museum installation team installed the panels.
By the way, the photo of me on the masthead of this blog was made by my assistant on the job, Mike Starghill, while I was shooting the panoramas.

The New Avenue

You may have seen, or will see, this campaign on Metro buses and bus stops around the DC area touting "The New Ave."  I shot a series of portraits featuring an amazing variety of business owners, workers, and patrons of the New Hampshire Avenue crossroads area in Takoma Park, MD as part of the city's economic development push for the area.  Mom and Pop shops with people from all around the globe (Africa, The Caribbean, India, and many South American countries) inhabit this area just outside the DC line and inside the beltway.  Within these couple of miles you truely can hear and catch a glimpse of people and products from all over the world.  It was fun to interact and photograph such a wide variety of people.  I have several photos from the project in the "people" portfolio on my website kittner.com. You can also find out more about the area at: http://thenewave.com.

Calendar Month for Mural

This photo I shot of Byron Peck's great mural painted on the side of our studio building is featured as the "February" photo for the City Arts calendar.  City Arts is Byron's non-profit that enriches neighborhoods through community art.  The mural was also featured in the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development's 2009 annual report; touting that Main Street funds paid half the project cost and that the trompe l'oeil facade that has transformed a blank wall into a beautiful neighborhood landmark.

Will You Be My Co-Anchor?

Thrilled to be part of the team that produced this full page ad for the Newseum that appeared on the back of today's Washington Post Weekend section.  Highlighting a Valentine's promotion, the image was produced with Will Ferrell's "Anchorman" in mind.

Vietnam Memorial Panorama

I had a great opportunity to shoot the magnificent and moving Vietnam Memorial Wall for the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund (VVMF) late this fall.  The image is being used as a home page banner for a campaign to build an education center adjacent to the memorial.  I worked with Public Strategies on the creative for the project.  It was an honor to be involved and amazing to be there for the dawn shoot...the quiet of the new day mixed with the intensity of the wall, which is truly a compelling piece of art.  Loved seeing the reflection of the Washington Monument in the shiny surface.  Here's 2 images from the shoot. Check out the VVMF site at: buildthecenter.org.
